Telmisartan Significantly Improves Insulin Resistance in Hypertensive Patients with Insulin Resistance

Aim

To determine effect of telmisartan on serum adiponectin level and insulin resistance in hypertensive patients.

Study Patients

Patients with hypertension (SBP >140 mmHg and DBP >90 mmHg) (N = 25)

Patient Groups

  • Hypertensive patients with insulin resistance (HOMA-IR index ≥2.5) (N = 15)
  • Hypertensive patients without insulin resistance (HOMA-IR index <2.5) (N = 10)

Study Treatment

Telmisartan 40 mg/day

Study Duration

24 weeks

Parameters Assessed

  • HOMA-IR
  • High sensitivity C-reactive protein levels (hs-CRP)
  • Serum adiponectin
  • Left ventricular mass index (LVMI)

Results

Significant decrease in HOMA index in insulin resistance group with Telmisartan

Significant decrease in hs-CRP in insulin resistance group with Telmisartan

Significant increase in adiponectin levels in insulin resistance group with Telmisartan

Significant decrease in LVMI in insulin resistance group with Telmisartan

Conclusion

  • Telmisartan, in the usual antihypertensive dosage, significantly increases serum adiponectin and results in the improvement of insulin resistance in hypertensive patients with insulin resistance.
  • It also significantly improves hs-CRP and LVMI in these patients.
