ESCRS 2025: Current and Future Role of Dropless after Cataract Surgery: An International Yofs-Study
Presenter: Johannes Birtel
A cross-sectional survey of cataract centers in 19 countries, mainly in Europe and the USA, explored surgeons’ attitudes toward dropless after cataract surgery (DACS). Of 208 respondents, most perform 250–500 cataract surgeries annually; 92% routinely use intracameral antibiotics. Although over 90% knew of DACS, only 19% had performed it, and most (75%) continue its use.
Surgeons without DACS experience perceived more barriers—higher risk of inflammation, increased intraocular pressure, and lack of evidence—than those performing DACS. Notably, 76% believed patients would prefer to avoid postoperative eye drops. Currently, DACS is not widely implemented, but most expect it will become standard care for many patients in the future.
