AOCCN 2025: A Cross-Sectional Study About Parents’ Knowledge, Attitude and Practices on the Use of Midazolam Spray in Outside Hospital Settings
Presenter: Dr. Manas Khegde
An observational study evaluated the administration technique along with effectiveness and side effect profile of midazolam nasal spray among 425 parents of children with seizures.
Despite doctor demonstrations (by 93%) on spray use, parents lacked knowledge as only 34.6% of them administered it within 2 mins of seizure onset. Parent awareness of spray use was in only 50% of families (72% kept spray handy, 78% checked its expiry). Correct positioning, priming and dosing were followed by 66%, 62% & 62%, resp. Seizures stopped within 5 minutes in 80% of cases; 27% parents knew about the option of a second dose. Side effects occurred in 44.9%. Errors in timing, technique and dosage were common despite overall effectiveness and safety with most parents (82%) finding it easy to administer.
