FIELD: Sub-Analysis in Diabetics with Metabolic Syndrome

Fenofibrate significantly reduces CV events in diabetics with metabolic syndrome: Analysis of FIELD study

Aim

To evaluate the effect of fenofibrate on cardiovascular (CV) events in diabetics with metabolic syndrome.

Methods

Analysis of Fenofibrate Intervention and Event Lowering in Diabetes (FIELD) study

Patients

Type 2 diabetics with metabolic syndrome (N=8183)

Study Groups

Fenofibrate 200 mg/day (N=4080) vs. placebo (N=4103)

Follow-up Period

5 years

Efficacy Outcome Measure

Incidence of CV events

Results

  • Fenofibrate significantly reduced the risk of CV events in patients with hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia and/or low HDL (Figure 1)
Figure 1. Effect of fenofibrate in patients with different features of metabolic syndrome

  • Fenofibrate was also effective in primary prevention of CV events in patients of metabolic syndrome or its components (Figure 2)
Figure 2. Effect of fenofibrate in primary prevention of CV events

  • Multivariate analysis showed that fenofibrate significantly reduced the risk of CV events in metabolic syndrome by 12%

Conclusion

Fenofibrate significantly reduces CV events in type 2 diabetics with features of metabolic syndrome.
