To investigate whether intensive statin therapy is associated with better outcomes than moderate statin therapy in patients with stable CHD
TNT (Treating to New Targets) Trial
18 Mar, 14
Aim
Study Patients
CHD patients with LDL <130 mg/dl
Study Group
Atorvastatin 80 mg (N=4995) vs. atorvastatin 10 mg (N=5006)
Study Period
4.9 years
Results
- Significant reduction in major CV events with 80 mg atorvastatin
- Significant reduction in key individual primary outcomes
- Substantial benefits seen even in secondary end-points
- Significantly lower LDL with 80 mg atorvastatin
Safety
- Similar incidence of rhabdomyolysis in both groups (2 with 80 mg vs. 3 with 10 mg)
- Significantly greater incidence of increased liver transaminases in patients receiving 80 mg atorvastatin (1.2% vs. 0.2% for 10 mg)
- No significant increase in adverse effects in patients with LDL <70 mg/dl vs. those with higher LDL
Conclusion
Intensive lipid-lowering therapy with 80 mg atorvastatin in patients with stable CHD provides significant clinical benefit beyond that afforded by atorvastatin 10.
