TNT: Sub-analysis in Men and Women

Introduction

Aggressive LDL lowering with 80 mg atorvastatin yields similar and significant benefits in men and women with stable CHD: Analysis of Treating to New Targets (TNT) study

Aim

To determine whether the benefits of intensive lipid lowering with 80 mg atorvastatin are equally applicable to women with stable coronary heart disease (CHD)

Methods

Analysis of TNT trial

Patients

Stable CHD (Women, N=1902; Men, N=8099)

Study Groups

Atorvastatin 10 mg vs. atorvastatin 80 mg

Mean Follow-up Period

4.9 years

Results

  • In women and men, intensive therapy with atorvastatin 80 mg significantly decreased the risk of major cardiovascular events by 27% and 21% respectively as compared with atorvastatin 10 mg (Figure 1)
Figure 1. Risk reductions in major cardiovascular events with atorvastatin 80 mg vs. 10 mg in men and women

  • Number needed to prevent one cardiovascular event over 4.9 years with atorvastatin 80 mg vs. 10 mg was 29 for women and 30 for men

Conclusion

Intensive lipid-lowering treatment with atorvastatin 80 mg produces significant reductions in relative risk for major cardiovascular events compared with atorvastatin 10 mg in both women and men with stable CHD
