To compare the effects of long-term treatment of nebivolol with carvedilol on left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), exercise capacity and clinical outcomes in hypertensive CHF patients.
Nebivolol vs Carvedilol
2 Nov, 11
Nebivolol is as Effective as Carvedilol in Treatment of Hypertensive CHF Patients
Aim
Study Patients
Hypertensive CHF patients, with LVEF < 40% and in New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class I, II or III (N = 160)
Study Groups
- Nebivolol (n = 80)
- Carvedilol (n = 80)
Nebivolol was initiated at 1.25 mg/day. If tolerated, dose was sequentially up-titrated every week. Target dose of 10 mg/day was reached by week 4.
Carvedilol was initiated at 3.125 mg twice daily. If tolerated, dose was sequentially up-titrated every week. Target dose of 50 mg/day was reached by week 6.
Target dose of Nebivolol and Carvedilol was reached in 60 and 57 patients, respectively.
Assessments
- Clinical evaluation
- Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF)
- 6-minute walking test (6MWT)
Study Duration
24 months
Results
Nebivolol and Carvedilol significantly improved LVEF by a similar extent
Nebivolol and Carvedilol significantly improved exercise capacity by a similar extent
Nebivolol and Carvedilol significantly improved NYHA class by a similar extent
Nebivolol and Carvedilol caused significant and similar decreases in HR and SBP
Rate of clinical events was similar in Nebivolol and Carvedilol groups
Conlusion
Nebivolol and Carvedilol appear to be similarly effective in the long-term treatment of hypertensive CHF patients.
